Wigston is a popular suburb in south leicester and offers all of the benefits of living in an individual working town whilst still having all of the city’s general amenities close at hand.
The suburb is closely linked with neighbouring Oadby and is just five miles from the centre of the city. The area offers lots of employment opportunities in a wide range of local companies, including those on the industrial estate at Chartwell Drive.
The housing choices are also varied and plentiful, as are the local amenities. The area’s residents can make use of a wide range of nearby facilities, including many leisure opportunities, a large library, doctors’ surgeries, takeaways and cafes, pubs, petrol stations, major supermarkets and independent stores.
Wigston also offers excellent transport links to the rest of the city and beyond. It is just a five-minute hop to connect with the ring road and the M69 or M1 and is also near to the A6. A 20-minute bus journey can get you on to a mainline train to London or you can hop on a train at South Wigston station nearby.
Many residents of Wigston live in 19th-century buildings which rose up around the local factories or post-war housing estates around the old centre of the town. There are also newer developments offering plenty of property choice.
The oldest of Wigston’s post-war suburban estates is Wigston Fields. This is in the north of the area, towards both Knighton and Leicester city centre. To the south and east of the old centre are the Little Hill and the Meadows estates, which were developed in the 1970s and 1980s.
Between the Meadows and Little Hill estates there is Wigston Harcourt, which combines to form a trio of developments marking the urban boundary of greater Leicester. Beyond that is agricultural land and areas where future property developments are likely.
The suburb’s main shopping street is Bell Street, which has just undergone a facelift. This formed part of a wider £830,000 scheme which has also led to major improvements to Oadby’s Parade.
Wigston offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities and local service providers, ranging from big-name brands to independent companies, including opticians, newsagents, opticians, beauty salons and hairdressers.
There are also plenty of green spaces in the Wigston area, including Peace Memorial Park, Freer Park and Aylestone Lane Park, and sports fans can enjoy football and rugby at Welford Road. Wigston also has new swimming and gym facilities on offer, and there is the Parklands Leisure Centre in Oadby, which has been extensively refurbished.
Wigston offers plenty of choice when it comes to educational opportunities. There is a good choice of primary and nursery schools, along with secondary school provision at Wigston Academy and Wigston College.
There are also independent schools nearby in the form of Stoneygate and Leicester Grammar schools, as well as at St Crispin’s near to Victoria Park and Maidwell on Welford Road. South Wigston, meanwhile, is home to the rebuilt South Leicestershire College, which offers many further education choices.
