Are you browsing the Keywest listings whilst saving to buy your very first home? Perhaps you have opened your own help to buy ISA? If so, you are amongst more than half a million people who have opened these ISAs, which offer bonuses from the government of as much as £3,000, according to new figures.
The latest data also shows that since the ISA scheme, the Help to Buy equity loan and the mortgage guarantee scheme were launched, there have been more than 160,000 associated completions and 80 per cent of these involved first-time buyers.
A total of 94 per cent of the completions under the Help to Buy scheme have happened outside London, and the average price of the properties purchased is £189,795, which is significantly under the national average of £292,000.
Around 129,000 first-time-buyer households have bought their first property as a result of Help to Buy, which was designed to offer support for responsible lending. The average property price-to-income ratio is capped at 4.5 times under the mortgage guarantee initiative in a bid to ensure that lending is responsible and affordable.
On average, over 1,000 households each month have bought their own home using Right to Buy since the initiative was given a breath of new life in 2012, creating a total figure of 52,500 households.
Up until March, 2016 saw 3,250 people buying under the scheme, and a total of over 309,000 households have received government-backed help to buy a home since 2010. This amounts to 4,350 new homeowners every month, or 141 a day.
George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, called the news that more than 500,000 people have opened their Help to Buy ISAs ‘hugely encouraging’. Greg Clark, the Communities Secretary, added that the latest figures showed how people are being helped to realise their home-ownership dreams and how new opportunities are open to households that may have previously believed that owning their own home was an unattainable ambition.
