We’ve got lots and lots of reasons why we think that Leicester is the perfect place to live, but now we’ve got yet another selling point for our great city and county – it’s been named as the country’s Luckiest Place to Live.
Coming on the back of Mark Selby’s victory in the World Snooker Championship and the city’s top football team’s momentous Premier League win, the city of Leicester has now also been given the top spot in the league of luck compiled by the National Lottery.
The latest lottery statistics show that the LE postcode region which covers Leicestershire is now high on the table listing the major prizes won in the last two years of the National Lottery across the country’s 12 different postcode areas.
The data shows that no fewer than 63 players with homes in the LE postcode area of Leicestershire have won a major prize of at least £50,000 over the previous two-year period. This equates to almost three winners every month.
The man responsible for paying out the National Lottery’s big winners, Andy Carter, who is officially the lottery’s senior winners’ adviser, admits that the city of Leicester and the wider area is experiencing ‘a real high’ right now. He calls Mark Selby’s snooker victory ‘stunning’ and its footballing story ‘historic’. He said the National Lottery was ‘delighted’ to give the region yet ‘more great news’.
Andy said that the country can now boast no fewer than 4,250 millionaires created by the National Lottery. Six new millionaires are also made each week, he added, meaning that ‘another local winner’ is ‘likely’ to make an appearance ‘soon’.
Since the National Lottery was launched in 1994, Leicestershire has seen the creation of 55 millionaires as a direct result. This is equivalent of one millionaire being created every five months.
Along with the millionaires, a total of 601 of what are classed as top-tier prizes – comprising amounts of at least £50,000 – have been claimed by players with homes within the LE (Leicestershire) postcode.
Recent winners who have chosen to have their wins made public include Leicestershire couple Richard Brewin and Rowena Barnwell, who won £53,590 on the EuroMillions. Other success stories include Mick Bell, who scooped £1 million on a scratch card, and Karen Bottrill, who won two prizes – one of £1,000 and one of more than £1 million – on a single Lotto ticket.
The National Lottery has also benefited entire communities in the Leicestershire area. In 2015, for example, projects within the Leicester area benefited from 217 National Lottery grants worth a total of almost £19 million.
