If you are looking for a place to live that truly cares about its residents’ well-being, then Leicester offers one of the most inclusive and eco-friendly cities of tomorrow.
“Leicester 2030: Our Future City” is a pioneering vision being realised by new partnerships between the University of Leicester, De Montfort University and Leicester City Council.
As part of a team effort, their aim is to bring into effect current EU plans to create a network of ultra-modern and progressive urban spaces across Europe. Cities such as Valencia, Berlin, Rome and Leicester will benefit from use of the latest technology and green resources to improve environmental harmony and enable citizens to become better connected with each other, both locally and globally.
Just some of the smart and sustainable ideas currently being phased in from December 2015 involve major improvements to Leicester’s transport systems and services and its air quality. The ongoing development of Ashton Green, Leicester’s new sustainable housing initiative, means that a series of transport system upgrades in the surrounding areas are planned to take place shortly.
New improved and shared pedestrian pathways and cycle lanes, access and crossing points, traffic calming and speed restriction measures and energy-efficient street lighting will soon be integrated at key points along Bennion Road, Beaumont Leys Lane, Leicester Road, Greengate Lane and Bevan Road. Leicester’s public transport service is also set to expand the horizons of local residents whilst also reducing its carbon footprint.
Air quality is also a high priority on Leicester’s agenda. The city has just adopted a new ten-year “Healthier Air for Leicester” plan. This will complement other current council proposals, such as “Connecting Leicester”, in order to support Leicester’s ambition to become one of the UK’s leading smart and sustainable cities. Planned actions to help reduce the city’s air pollution levels to below the EU average include:
- Careful use of trees and plants to create “green walls” to help to absorb air pollution at prime locations around the city.
- Introduction of a new low-emissions zone for buses and taxis in Leicester’s city centre by 2017.
- Proposed development of an ultra-low-emission zone for all vehicles and increased uptake of ultra-low-emission vehicles by Leicester residents by 2026.
- New mobile monitoring of air pollution to help measure, evaluate and improve air quality at more locations throughout the Leicestershire area.
