Leicester Is a ‘Top Trumps’ Place to Live
We can tell you all about the many benefits of living in Leicester, but you could always supplement your knowledge with a little research of your own. Forget trawling the internet or scouring the library, though: you could simply enjoy a game of cards with the kids.
Top Trumps has been captivating people of all ages for four decades, and it now has a version dedicated to the city of Leicester and its many attractions. The Leicester: 30 Things to See and Do set pits the 2008-built Curve Theatre against the 1390-built Guildhall and the Jewry Wall with its one decorative detail against the five-detail-strong Clock Tower. The National Space Centre achieves a Top Trumps rating of 96, while Leicester’s leafy New Walk is rewarded with a score of 75.
Each card in the 30-strong set also has a special blue duck rating, indicating the ‘ey up me duck’ appeal of each attraction and how ‘Leicester’ it really is.
Deborah Hunter, of Leicester City Council’s Arts and Museums Service, said the cards presented an enjoyable way of learning about the city’s 2,000-year history. She said that the game should encourage people to find out more about the places and buildings with links to Leicester’s past, adding that the pack makes a great gift or souvenir. Perhaps as a house-warming gift for you as you celebrate buying or renting your new Leicester home?
The new game also includes a city map and is on sale at the New Walk Museum and the Visit Leicester centre, priced at £5.99. It is not the first Top Trumps deck with Leicester connections, however, as King Richard III plays a starring role in the Top Trumps Top 30 Moments pack and the Play and Discover game features the National Space Centre.
Top Trumps first became popular in Britain in the 1970s. Each card features a numerical data list. The aim is to compare the values and try to trump an opponent and win their card.
The rights to the Top Trumps game were bought by the Winning Moves UK company in 1999. The packs were relaunched, and the topics have included everything from warships and military jets to movie stars and sharks. There have also been Collectors’ Edition cards released devoted to the likes of Doctor Who and The Lord of the Rings.
